Monopoly is the classic fast-dealing property trading board game. Find all of the latest versions in the store, play free online games, and watch videos all on the official Monopoly website! The main focus is to understand how the core gameplay element is transfer and how the shell is built by comparing two PC version of different producer – the Star Wars Monopoly by Hasbro (the same company of the board version) and the Doraemon Monopoly by Gameone (HongKong programmers!), which I see as a more successful adaptation of the gameplay.

This time I would like to compare 3 version of the well-known game Monopoly. This post begins in the description of the two games, concluded by analytical comparison.

What makes the game Monopoly
The rule of board monopoly is simple. With your token (avatar) you try to win over your opponents by purchasing lands, building apartment and hotels and receiving rent. The winner is the only one who didn’t get bankrupt (most cases it never happened as it takes a long time, so the player who make the most money wins). There are luck elements such as Chance, Community Chest and Jail in the game. A typical turn begins with the rolling of the dice and move around the board with the corresponding number of squares.

Comparison
Social value – Both digital version opens the options for multi-players or against AI, while in Star Wars version you could even play on the Internet through portals such as MSN Game Zone.

Gameplay & Shell – Star Wars version
Star Wars version is basically modifying only the shell but not much the gameplay itself. It utilizes features available only through digital game : the Monopoly strategies combined with music, sounds, characters and scenes of the Star Wars movies. The version stay with the Star Wars galaxy from the Classic trilogy. Although the property colors, values and property cards are the same as classic Monopoly, the places are changed to Star Wars setting like Death Star, Tatooine and Cloud City, and the correspondent film clip would pop up when a player lands on the property. The currency also changes from dollars to Galactic Credits. The house and hotels are also converted to X-wings/TIE Fighters and Millennum Falcon/Star Destroyer. Yet, Jail, Free Parking and Go to Jail spaces are exactly the same as on board game, which is very awkward to see in the game. And of course you choose not your token but your Star Wars avatar – Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker with C-3PO as the banker (He makes very funny comments on ever move). The character are voiced by the same character in the movie, and the background music is of course the famous Star War OSTs. All graphics are 3D as to resemble the movie-like experience while playing. The characters react like the way they would be in the movie. For example, Chewbacca would jump to glide across the game board, Princess Leia would shoot other players if she lands on an expensive property and Solo would murmur about paying a rent. The dice rolling is kept with a mouse click (and the 2 dices actually appear on screen). The animation of ‘rolling the dice’ is worth praising as it is different every time and super funny. For example, a X-wing shoots a TIE fighter landing onto the dices thus give you the space to move.

Apart from rolling (clicking), the computer will do your move, hand out the money or take the payment, and even read out the ‘Rebel and Imperial’ cards (Chance and Community Chest cards). Trading and auction of property(s) is available and the scene is awesome (imagine Darth Vader trading Death Star with Luke Skywalker this is amazing – with C-3PO as the host).
Although the animation is funny, after a few rounds it gets annoying. With the vast number of rounds you needed to finish a monopoly game, the animation significantly slow the gaming process and reduce the fun of the gameplay itself, as only some could be turned off.

Shell / Gameplay – Doreamon version
These two fields merge better in the Doraemon version, especially on the magic item function. The backstory becomes part of the constitutive rules as defined by Salen and Zimmerman.
Doraemon version has more choice in terms of game fields such as Doreamon’s neighbourhood and the snow mountain – all of them appears in the animation. The currency is red bean buns (Doraemon’s favourite food). You can pick your character like Doraemon, Sewashi (the main character), Shizuka (the only female character), Takeshi (the consummate bully), Suneo (the wealthy but arrogant brat), and Dorami (Doraemon’s sister). Although the character do not react with the game fields, they resembled their character in the anime, giving each their own strengths and weaknesses. Doraemon and Dorami have half of all the magical items in stock (most of them appeared in the anime) at the very start in his ‘built-in’ inventory bag. Yet Doraemon loves to eat the buns so each step he takes he eat some buns (the money!). Takeshi could take away other players buns when they pass by on street. Shizuka would take a shower every four rounds because she is obsessed with cleanliness and you lose a round. Suneo is very wealth at the start and very difficult to get bankrupt There is not mentioned in the manual but you could guess by linking the avatar to the backstory.

Within the Doraemon monopoly there are 8 mini-games where players could compete with each other and earn red bean buns. There are also shops that sells the magical items. The items are functioned in different ways, making the game very challenging and fun. They could make other play sleep and unable to move, get the rent from the land instead of paying, sent someone to ‘jail’ – the unlucky strip, make the time go slower, change position with other player etc. To add more dimension to the game, there is a ‘god’ which you might encounter (as a replacement of the Chance cards). He would let you chose within three magic box where only one give positive result. The result could affect all players or only one player. Tally tdl source code free download. Depending on how you use your magical items you could prevent or amplify the changes. As replacement of the Community Treasure cards you may walk into a mine of red bean buns, and the amount you could harvest depends on the ‘economic circumstances’ at that particular time.

The rule of winning is also changed. In normal monopoly you have to make other bankrupt, but in this game it is not easy (nearly impossible). So, you could chose before playing how many years you want to play, and at the end, the programme will calculate your properties and buns on hand, grade your performance and you could print out a Doraemon Monopoly Certificate. There is also a billboard to show others your performance.

All grahphics are 2D and it fits to the flatness of the anime. There is little animation on screen so the game is more focus to the gameplay, compare to watching movie clips. The voice are the same as anime, and the lines are fun too. Again, it gets annoying when it repeats everytime and it could not be turned off. The famous Doraemon sound track is missed in the game.

Conclusion
To me, the board version is more concentrated to the rule system, the Ludosis, and it is basically agonistic and aleatory (four game type defined by Rager Caillois). And both digital versions extend the focus to the shell by making very good use on referential music (or clips) and connect the players into the back story, introducing mimicy to the game and raise the degree of semiosis. On one hand Star Wars version focus more on the cinematic experience. Players are draw more to the representational parts of the game such as quality of graphics and audio, and the ‘secondary’ sphere takes over the core. It seems like the monopoly game is just part of the artifacts of the movie itself. On the other hand, Doraemon version focus more on enhancing the gameplay by the shell, making virtually everything as gameplay. These change the effective strategies that emerge from the game and add fun to it. This also raises the degree dynamics of the game by the introduction of magical items. Also, the ‘jailing’ in Doreamon version is much more cruel than in Star War and board version, giving a little ilinx taste. Overall, I see the Star War version as a pseudo-digital version of monopoly and Doreasmon version as a more successful transformation from simple board game to a complex configuration digital game.
