In 1972, Magnavox developed the first ever volleyball video game for their Odyssey Game System (before the famous Pong video game developed by Atari in 1972). Since that time, over 50 volleyball video games have been produced around the world. The complex indoor 6-person game has been attempted as a video game going back to one my early favorites, Volleyball for Nintendo (1987), to some well crafted recent versions such as Women’s Volleyball Championship for PlayStation 2, and International Volleyball 2009 (the second version from its 2004 edition) for the PC (download a free trial of International Volleyball 2009 here).

The outdoor sand 2-person game has become an interesting genre all its own. From great games, like a couple of late 80’s classics, Kings of the Beach and Super Spike Volleyball for Nintendo, to some outright strange versions like Popeye Beach Volleyball or Venice Beach Volleyball. Game-makers have even gone as far as degrading the sport with Malibu Bikini Volleyball and Dead or Alive Xtreme Volleyball.

There are also some online volleyball games Mynci Beach Volleyball, Boom Boom Volleyball, Y2 Spike Volleyball, Slime Volleyball and others that are available for free downloads on a PC, but these games seem to test grounds for computer programmers. I must admit, I’ve killed some time playing these games too.
